After researching I was tasked with recreating Shirley’s style. I found an image that she took of an outdoor set of toilets with graffiti on them. Because her images are of urban settings I wanted to recreate this one in particular, because there is a set of similar outdoor toilets near where I live. The one in my picture is also decaying and shutdown similar to a lot of her work during the slum clearance.

I looked on google maps to do a recce of the area before I travelled to take the picture so I had an idea of any sort of obstacles. Thankfully there wasn’t any problems so I travelled to the location and unfortunately.. There was a transit van parked right in front of the subject, so I returned the next day and got the shot. I then edited it and made it black and white to pay homage to the original.

One thing I liked though was that the old toilets only had a male and female where as the modern one also has accessibility for disabled people as well. This shows how a lot has changed just in recognition for people that need access to it.
