Peter Saville

Peter Saville was was born in 1955 in Manchester. In 1978 he graduated from graduatedfrom the Manchester Polytechnic School in Graphics Design and designs a poster for Tony Wilsons Factory Club.

Here is some examples of his work that, on the left is the Kvadrat Showroom (2009) and to the right is a poster for the Factory Club (1978). One image that stands out to me is one I found in the book "Contemporary Graphic Design". It is called "Loop", It sticks out to me because of the blurred section of the image. It makes it stick out

I found one of his covers (from Fac 183R Need Order True Faith) In the Factory Records book. This one stood out to me as the colours are very bright contrasting against the background yet all the colours are also very pale and feel somewhat washed out.

Neville Brody
Neville Brody was born in 1957 He is a typographer and graphic designer. Growing he studied in the London College of Printing where he did experimental work, which gained criticism because the school mainly taught traditional printing methods. He started working for The Face Magazine from 1980 -1993. He is also one of the founding members of Fontworks where he's designed over 20 fonts.

I am particularly a fan of his typography work where he used words to develop an image. The one on the left I like the most as it is very simplistic and has a vector design.

Here's a cover I found in the book "The Graphic Language of Neville Brody". Brody did this cover for Arena magazine in 1988. I like how contrasting the type is
against the photograph of Michael Caine.
He is quoted as saying:
“As the interface of today’s social and cultural change, graphic design will continue to evolve as a reflection of the needs and values of its audience and its practitioners”

Recreating their style for my own work
Neville Brody:
During research for Neville Brody I discovered the poster he did in for the “Screw The Rules” lecture. The poster contains block contrasting colours so they the font really pops out. It is a typography poster with the phrase “screw the rules” repeated in the shape of a rocket smashing into the main title. I really liked this image and instantly wanted to recreate it using the words and phrases I did on the mind maps at the start of class.
When recreating the image I firstly thought up of ideas to use for a shape instead of a rocket. I was thinking rather a guitar or a camera as they are both something I am passionate about. I decided to pursue to the guitar solely as it’s more of a unique shape rather than a square. I then found a reference image online for the kind of idea I was looking for.
Next I needed to think of a phrase, I tried just my name “SHANEMULLIN” or the phrases from the mind map. I printed off an image of a telecaster and used tracing paper over it to test out these phrases. Just my name didn’t quite look right in my opinion so I decided to go for a mix of the phrases and my name occasionally.
Then I wanted to experiment with fonts. I did the same phrase several times with different fonts and asked several people for their opinions on each font. The most popular ones were the Impact and Rockwell font’s the general consensus was that they were the easiest to read and popped out. The other fonts were labelled as boring. I then put the Impact and Rockwell fonts into Photoshop and tested them in front of an array of colours, with black and white fonts. I got more feedback about this and decided to pursue the Rockwell font fully.
Finally getting on to the main project, I copied the same image of the Telecaster that was in my sketchbook on to Photoshop and started putting words and phrases on top of it in a red font. It took quite a long time to position each word in a aesthetically pleasing order, but I managed to be through it with ease.
Final Product

Peter Saville:

Honestly I didn't put as much work into recreating Saville's piece as I did with Brody's, although I feel like it came out much better out of the two. I particularly liked the black and yellow poster he did for Factory Records, so I knew straight away I wanted to recreate that in my own way. I started off by having somebody take a picture of me doing the same pose. I then took it into Photoshop and with the help of my tutor I minipulated it. I cropped out my head and hands and tried out differant filters. I then decided on two faces and merged them together. To finish it off I made it yellow. I then added the pillars and phrases.

Wall Piece
During the second lesson I was tasked to do an art piece on A0 paper in the same style of what I've been working on. I chose to work on the typography style and do another guitar. I sketched the rough shape then started using the same words I used previously, then I cut it out and stuck it on red and yellow card as well as painting the background black. I then added the phrase "SELF AS SEEN" randomly on the black parts.
