For my homework I was tasked with taking 5 photographs with my DSLR on manual setting. The photos must be correctly exposed, have an interesting composition, tell part of my story and as I said, they have to be taken with a DSLR.

I decided to take a trip to the Christmas Markets in Manchester with my mum and sister and thought this would be a perfect opportunity to take pictures! Manchester has always been important to me. The culture it possesses is second to non.

Daily Commute

I was messing around with my camera while on the bus. I decided this would be a perfect opportunity to take a picture, as it's the same bus I take to college everyday. The image is subtle, I really like how it's just of the seat and my foot is just off to the side.

Christmas Shopping

I took this picture outside the Arndale, I really liked how the lights behind the glass looked like the metal shavings waterfall effect you see at concerts.

Homelessness

(This is split into two images)

Image 1:

Manchester has a high number of homeless people and there is a sculpture in St Ann's Square that depicts Jesus Christ as a homeless person. The sculpture is called "Jesus the Homeless" and it was only put up this year. This was the perspective of looking at the homeless person.

Image 2:

This is the perspective that the homeless person would be looking out at. I used the camera to make the people look like they're blurred as if they're walking really fast past him. Another thing that really contrasts in these pictures is that the Christmas Markets attract a lot of people and it's a very exciting time of year as well. The second picture is packed with people enjoying themselves while the first picture is very solitary and sad.

Demolition in progress

Manchester is an ever growing ecosystem, buildings are constantly being redeveloped. I just randomly walked down a side street and came across a building that had recently been destroyed. I found it really interesting and had to get a snap of it. As I said Manchester is always changing. I love the mix of the old and new buildings. It has a very unique look to it that other cities can't quite provide.

Unfortunately due to the late winter nights I had to take these pictures during the night. I'm still trying to master using manual setting and I've been struggling shooting at night without a tripod. I got a lot of motion blur because the shutter speed was low. The only time I actually intended to have motion blur was the homeless picture, and even then I still struggled trying to get that shot as the background lights blurred as well.

Besides that though I really enjoyed taking the pictures in Manchester.

(All pictures were taken using the Canon 1300d with the 18-55mm lens on manual setting)
